I’m Jo and I’m Mummy to 2 beautiful Girls Olivia and Connie.
Last year we finally had a formal diagnosis of Dyslexia, and Visual Stress for Olivia (9) after 2 years of battling with school and trying to find the money to fund a private diagnosis.
We are extremely lucky that we ended up moving Olivia to another school – who funded a full diagnostic assessment for dyslexia within weeks of her being there. But I am fully aware that this is very rare and we are incredibly fortunate π
Before moving schools we were all struggling with Olivia’s difficulties. She was struggling at school, teachers didn’t seem willing/able to effectively support he and meet her learning needs. Her behaviour was becoming unmanageable with extreme melt downs, i know realise how stressed, frustrated and anxious school was making her. At the time, we felt at a loss of how to effectively help our daughter, and we didnt have the cash to fund a private assessment.
All this changed once we found the right setting for Olivia. Whilst her dyslexia hasn’t gone away – we are now more aware of her needs, the school are effectively supporting her and her learning, and most importantly – Olivia is HAPPY!
As her Mum – i have spent a lot of time researching dyslexia, the effects on a person and how to support and help in the best ways i can. I have also had to battle with schools and GP’s to get them to listen, to take me seriously when I said I knew something was a miss with her. I have learned a lot along my way – some good and some bad points, I’ve made errors when dealing with schools and health professionals, and if I can help anyone else starting out on this journey, then that makes me happy. π
I have learned to be the best possible advocate for my daughter – and whilst I am not an expert – I believe I can help others too.
